At Katünaa, design is our way of telling stories, and the stories start with the materials.
Every fiber, bead, and carving in our collection carries the soul of Colombia. Not just through craft, but through place, meaning, and evolution. We’re not just designing objects, we’re building a visual language rooted in identity.
We’re proud to use plantain fiber, a material deeply rooted in Colombia, in our copper accented mochila bags. This fiber, harvested and prepared by hand, brings strength, texture, and an unmistakably Colombian character to each piece. It’s not just sustainable, it’s symbolic, a way to carry our landscape and heritage into everyday design.
Our Orchid Mochila is the only Wayúu bag in our collection, and one we hold especially close. It’s crafted using the single thread technique (un hilo), the most detailed and time consuming of the three traditional Wayúu weaving methods. This technique allows for tighter, more refined patterns. The design features Colombia’s national flower, the orchid! Not just for its beauty, but as something elevated and deeply Colombian.
In our beaded mochila made by the Kamentsáa, the orchid appears again, this time not woven, but sculpted in beads, each one sewn by hand. It's a meticulous process that turns a functional bag into a collector’s piece.
Our ottomans are wrapped in caña flecha, the same fiber used to make the Sombrero Vueltiao, one of Colombia’s most iconic symbols. We rework those black and white patterns, into bold seating, connecting tradition and interior design in a single object. We believe everyday objects can, and should, be works of art. That’s why we design things that serve a purpose, but also live as statements.
The palosangre wood spoons, whose handles are wrapped in Werregue fiber, a weaving technique passed down through the Wounaan communities of Colombia’s Pacific. It’s a small detail, but one that transforms a simple utensil into something more design forward.
Why It Matters?
To us, preserving Colombian identity means giving it room to breathe, shift, and evolve, so that new generations of artisans can see themselves not just as keepers of tradition, but as designers, collaborators, and artists!
