Hi!

I’m Paula van Meerbeke, the founder of Katünaa, and I wanted to share a little bit about how it all began.

I studied Art History in Bogotá, Colombia, and later worked at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. When I returned home during the pandemic, I felt a strong pull to do something creative, something that connected design, art, and purpose. I had already fallen in love with the world of Colombian craftsmanship, but when I met an anthropologist working closely with artisans, I found myself diving even deeper into that universe.

I started by showcasing traditional artisanal pieces, the ones that carry centuries of history, but soon realized I wanted Katünaa to evolve. I dreamed of creating our own designs, reimagining classic techniques with a more contemporary approach, while still honoring the roots of each craft. 🎨

Today, we work directly with artisans and indigenous communities across Colombia, exploring new materials and ideas together. Some prefer to preserve their traditions exactly as they are, which I completely respect, but others are eager to innovate, and that’s where the magic truly happens. ✨

The name Katünaa comes from Wayunaaiki, the language of the Wayuu people from northern Colombia, and it means “to have wings.” To me, it represents growth, creativity, and the freedom to keep evolving, both for us and the artisans we collaborate with.

This year marks a very special milestone, our first ever trade show in New York! It’s a huge step for us, and I couldn’t be prouder to share the work of so many talented hands with a wider audience.

This journey has been full of learning, challenges, and growth, but it continues to remind me why I started: to celebrate the beauty of handmade design and to build a bridge between tradition and modernity.

Thank you for being part of this story.

With love,
Paula
